Perth's Vanished City
A lost-heritage walk for the curious: read the survivors — a lone Tudor arch, a neglected graveyard, the last Edwardian stage — to uncover the Perth that was demolished, and the 1966 fight that saved a piece of it. About memory, loss, and who chooses what a city keeps.

Every city buries its own past. Perth has demolished more of itself than most — grand
buildings gone for freeways and clear sightlines. You are a city historian; read the
survivors, gather what was lost, and at the end say what keeps a city's memory alive.
A lone Tudor archway at the head of St Georges Terrace. Once it was the gateway to the
Pensioner Barracks — a vast three-storey castle of brick, built 1863–66 by Richard Roach
Jewell for the Enrolled Pensioner Force.
In the mid-1960s the wreckers came — most of it razed for the Mitchell Freeway and to
clear the view from Parliament House down the Terrace. Only this arch was spared.
But it was no accident it survived. In 1961 a Barracks Defence Council formed; the public
fought; and on 19 October 1966 Parliament voted 26 to 18 to keep the arch standing.
